This is a pencil
drawing that is done on toned paper. The paper color
is grey and the pencil work is done, of
course,
in black. There is just a little bit of white chalk to
enhance the highlights. The portrait is of my roommate
and good friend,
Gordon Ellsworth Eis. We traveled to Italy together.
He died in 2000 of cancer. I miss him.

Portrait at 17
Done
at 17 when I was a junior in high school. The book
I am holding is now
in my son's collection. Done probably in 1942 or 1943,
I'm not sure which.
It was done using a mirror. I got the eyes kind of cockeyed,
and the scale
is a little too large. It led me then to go on and do
a number of
portraits, eventually leading to doing a set
of four murals in my high
school in which I did full-scale figures at life-size.

Early
Morning Self Portrait
While my wife and my son were still asleep,
I came down into the studio early in the morning. I painted
this all at once. I have never touched this since. I spent
about an hour on it. I had intended to take it up to full
color but I never got to that point, and I have decided in
my old age to leave it alone. It is one that is pretty accurate
to me at that point. Behind me are two of my sculptures;
one is called Lamentation and the other is called Ikhenaton,
the Egyptian pharaoh.
